Light Pollution - the dark side of light

Light is an inseparable part of our world. It is so significant that we often use light as a synonym for hope, optimism and knowledge. No wonder the invention of electric bulbs marked the beginning of a new era for humankind. It helped us to see in the dark hours and increased our productivity by giving us more well-lit hours.

But it is important to realize that light needs to used with great care caution. Excessive, inappropriate or unnecessary use of artificial lighting is called light pollution.

Environmentalists, naturalists, astronomers and other social activists world wide are concerned about this issue. Light pollution leads to disturbance in the natural body cycle, also called circadian rythm of living organisms. Artificial outdoor lighting in the nights confuse animals and birds, leading to troubles in their sleeping patterns. It also affects migratory birds which sometimes lose their way due to unnatural lighting. Excessively bright night sky reduce the visibility of stars and other celestial bodies, which makes astronomical studies difficult. Unwanted light can become a distraction. It may lead loss of privacy for people. Improper use of artificial light can also lead to energy loss.

Light pollution could be of many types including light trespass, over illumination, glare, light clutter and skyglow. All these pose a serious problem that need our immediate attention and action.

We all can help to decrease light pollution and build a healthier world. Turning off unwanted lights, ensuring that street lights are directed downwards resulting in less escape of light to the sky and creating more energy efficient innovative lighting ideas will all help.

Let us hope that we can get back the starry night sky and flora and fauna with perfect ecological balance. Let's illuminate the world with our inner light and not light pollution.
