This international Environment Day, RandomREVERIES has come up
with a list of 4 famous environmentalists whose courage, determination and love
for nature will truly amaze you. Especially if you are a nature loving freak,
you would certainly have fun knowing about them. So, here we go…
1) Kinkri Devi : An illiterate women, who learnt to sign her
name a few years before her death, who still campaigned for protection of
environment from reckless mining and also raised her voice for a degree
granting college in her village deserves a big applause, right?
That’s Kinkri Devi, an old woman from Himachal Pradesh, who
did not mind her poverty or fear of losing her newly found job as a sweeper
while filing a complaint against miners in the high court.
2) Julia Butterfly Hill : When the seven years old Julia Hill
was hiking with her family, a butterfly sat on her finger and stayed there for
some time during the hike. From this incident, she was nicknamed Butterfly, a
name which she chose to keep for the rest of her life. But she is better known
for something else… living in a tree for more than 2 years to save it from
being cut. Her incredible courage and will power helped save the 180 foot, 1500
years old California Redwood tree.
3) Dian Fossey: Dian Fossey is a famous animal lover and her
favourite topic of study was mountain gorillas. She had to spend all her life’s
savings and an additional bank loan to make her dream trip to Africa. More than
doing scientific research, she spent her time enjoying her daily study,
discovering that gorillas weren’t as aggressive as was thought before and
trying to make friends with them. She had an affectionate bond with her gorilla
friends, especially one whom she named Digit. In fact, her dead body was buried
next to the grave of Digit. To protect gorillas, Dian chose strangely new
methods like wearing masks to scare poachers, burning animal traps etc, and she
called this active conservation.

related to environmental degradation. At the young age of 11 years, Ridhima
joined Greta Thunberg and 14 other young activists to file a complaint against
lack of attention of world leaders in issues concerning environment.
