Today, 2nd of October, is the day when one of the most influential world leaders was born. It is Gandhi Jayanti today, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhiji, the Indian freedom fighter, social reformer and pioneer of equality, fraternity and liberty. RandomREVERIES is here with a list of 7 striking things that make our beloved Bapuji, as he is called, a source of inspiration.
"MY LIFE IS MY MESSAGE"
This quote of the
Mahatma ( which means great soul) is enough to sum up why I am writing this,
why you are reading this or why the whole world is revering Gandhiji. He always
practiced what he preached. There was always simplicity in his life, as is
clear from his minimalistic diet and dressing. Also, he himself stepped up to
protest against many social evils even though
he was not directly affected by them. Thus he was himself a great
example for all the noble virtues he taught.
"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
MASS PRODUCTION AND CONSUMERISM
This is a
remarkable idea of Gandhiji, he opposed consumerism and mass production.
Instead he promoted production by the masses and simple, natural lifestyle.
"There is sufficiency in the world for man's need, but not for man's greed."
FASTING AS A MEANS OF REFORM
Mahatma Gandhi
gained mass support by his unique method of non-violent, yet powerful protest.
He used a peaceful mode of opposing injustice which he called Satyagraha or
insistence on truth.
"A Satyagrahi has infinite patience, abundant faith in others and ample hope."
EQUALITY
Gandhiji aimed
to build a just world, a place where everyone is equal. He fought for equality
and had to suffer brutal treatment for the same. But he kept on striving for
equality of gender, religion, caste, race etc.
" In a gentle way, you can shake the world. "
TRUTH AND NONVIOLENCE
Gandhiji is
best recognized in India as an icon of truth and nonviolence. All his actions
from peaceful protests to his letters to Hitler urging him to prevent the war
reflect his love for peace.
"Nonviolence is a weapon of the strong."
PERSEVERENCE
The journey
from Mohan to Mahatma was never a crystal stair. What made him an epitome of
good leadership was persistence and resilience.
He always emphasized the importance of doing the right thing even when
you think it will be difficult.
"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."
HUMANITY
Gandhiji believed in universal harmony. No wonder why he made such an amazing impact on the world. He proved that a leader is not someone who simply rules over others, but someone, who works for others, setting examples and empathizing with the sufferers. His approach towards politics and society was one of the most enlightened ideology ever. Renowned persons like Tolstoy, Einstein, Tagore etc greatly admired Gandhiji's ideals and at the same time, Gandhiji remained a source of solace for the common folk as well.
