The freedom of press is a major prerequisite for existence of a true democracy.Any restriction on the independence of media is seen as a threat for the freedom of the people as a whole.
Every year 3rd May is celebrated as World Press Freedom Day to remind us of the importance of 'Journalism without fear or favour' as quoted by UNESCO,to commemorate the journalists who risked their life for their profession and to reflect on ideal media ethics.
Democracy and freedom of press are inseparable. The betterment of one, sooner or later drags up the other along with it.An independent press is a powerful, yet peaceful weapon with which citizens can secure their rights.Constraints on the right to express one's views freely and the right to question what one feels unjust is something we can't afford to ignore.
Great leaders like Mahatma Gandhiji have always voted for independence of press as a means to fight oppression and spread equality, liberty and justice. Let us use this World Press Freedom Day to pay homage to all those brave journalists who had to give up their lives to keep the world updated and aware.
