THE ROCK GARDEN OF PALAKKAD

Palakkad, a  district of Kerala is full of wonderful places to visit. From the Malampuzha dam to the Palakkad Fort, there are many sites to offer excitement and pleasure to travelers. On our two days trip to the place, we were fortunate enough to visit the Rock Garden of Palakkad.

The entrance.

As we arrived at the Rock Garden after a short walk of around fifteen minutes from the famous Malampuzha dam, we were welcomed by a beautiful sculpture of a peacock, made of broken piece of bangles. Going inside, we saw a vast collection of statues and sculptures of all sorts – people, animals etc. What astonished me the most was the fact that most of the statues and sculptures were made of waste! Yes, every imaginable scrap, from old electric fuse to broken earthenware were utilized to make awesome art works. I realized that the peacock sculpture at the entrance was a mere introduction to the awe-inspiring things that awaited inside. I couldn’t help gazing with awe at the amazing creativity exhibited there.

Also, it is one of the best places to visit for camera-lovers. If you are like me, then you would certainly have some fun trying to pose like some of the statues and capturing funny memorable photos.

It is interesting to note that this is the first of its kind in South India and this collection of innovative art works is designed by the well-known sculptor Padmasree Nek Chand Saini, who was also the creator of the first rock garden of India.
